The SURN Social Studies and History Forum blog facilitates middle school and high school teachers who attended a workshop on using high yield literacy strategies in history class to share and showcase what they are doing in their classrooms, offers a forum for questions, and lets viewers read posts of how teachers are working to effectively use literacy strategies they learned at the workshop.
I truly enjoyed my time working with Social Studies teachers and SURN. I hope that we all begin the new school year with a fresh outlook to help our students. As we collaborate, we can reach to new heights as we work with our students and their literacy needs.
I'm a little nervous this evening before school starts because I have planned to use the literacy strategies from day one in my AP US classes this year. During the extremely useful sessions at W&M's School of Education, I came to recognize that one of the biggest problems students have had in AP US is Determining Importance. Therefore, I am going to introduce the Determining Importance strategy tomorrow and model two tools that should help students sift through the vast amount of information that the class presents. I'll post again soon with how things worked out....
