The SURN Social Studies and History Forum blog facilitates middle school and high school teachers who attended a workshop on using high yield literacy strategies in history class to share and showcase what they are doing in their classrooms, offers a forum for questions, and lets viewers read posts of how teachers are working to effectively use literacy strategies they learned at the workshop.

Getting Started
Hey everyone! Down here in Roanoke we are slowing getting our whole staff on board for integrating these literacy strategies into the classroom. We are starting with Making Connections which I have had some success with in my classroom already. If anyone has any ideas on how to share and present the strategies to their staff I would really appreciate it. I think we have a good plan so far but I'm always open to other ideas!

Revised Plans October 22
I am looking forward to reading your revised learning plans! I, too, have been working on modifying how I include the strategies and tools in my daily plans. My students seem to enjoy what we are doing, and their grades seem to reflect that they are retaining the material!
Please send your revised plans to my work email address:

Good evening! I received a classroom walk through this week from my principal. She observed the community learning wall, Frayer model, and student products that were posted. The data collection feedback went well and I am preparing for the SURN visit. I am going to be utilizing other power tools from the textbook this week. Any feedback from tools that you have used would be helpful! Have a great week!

SURN School Visit October 20th-What to Expect?
Hi!
Maury is scheduled for it's SURN visit on October 20th. I have to admit I am nervous. Can someone ease my mind and tell me what to expect? I'd like to know about how many individuals are coming to visit me in my classroom? How long will they observe? What are criteria are they evaluating me....is there an actual rubric? HELP?

Learning Plans 9/22/2010
I finished my first review of your learning plans. You have great foundations. As many of you noticed, it was a bit of a challenge to use the format and concepts. I, too, struggled with the learning plan template and concepts from SURN when I first started to write this style of plan. In my first plans, I typically tried to incorporate every strategy from Power Tools. The hardest thing for me to adjust to was simplifying the plan to focus on one strategy and carry it through from the beginning to the end of the lesson. I hope to have individual feedback to each of you by October 1, 2010.

Has anyone had a hard time out there putting their lesson plans together? I am having a little trouble with the format?

Getting to Know You Activity
Thanks to Denise Trombino!!!! We did the People Search getting to know you activity and it was a hit! It really broke the ice and helped familiarize the students with each other's names and helped us in that area as well! Looking forward to using the strategies next.
