The SURN Social Studies and History Forum blog facilitates middle school and high school teachers who attended a workshop on using high yield literacy strategies in history class to share and showcase what they are doing in their classrooms, offers a forum for questions, and lets viewers read posts of how teachers are working to effectively use literacy strategies they learned at the workshop.

Getting Started
Hey everyone! Down here in Roanoke we are slowing getting our whole staff on board for integrating these literacy strategies into the classroom. We are starting with Making Connections which I have had some success with in my classroom already. If anyone has any ideas on how to share and present the strategies to their staff I would really appreciate it. I think we have a good plan so far but I'm always open to other ideas!

Keep it simple! I just prsented a workshop on making connections to my entire faculty. I used a basic powerpoint. I then demonstrated how to engage learners. I modeled making connections, and then I guided the entire faculty in an activity where they worked with other teachers to make connections. We ended by identifying three ways to use the ideas in the classroom. I used T-charts and the Frayer model. I received great reviews. However, the math teachers still struggled to embrace the concepts!
ReplyDeleteI have utilzized the Frayer Model as well and it has been great! The students are really getting into the models! I have also incorporated the 3-2-1 as well and had them making connections. They have both been very effective.
