The SURN Social Studies and History Forum blog facilitates middle school and high school teachers who attended a workshop on using high yield literacy strategies in history class to share and showcase what they are doing in their classrooms, offers a forum for questions, and lets viewers read posts of how teachers are working to effectively use literacy strategies they learned at the workshop.

Almost November!
Can you believe how fast time passes? During September and October I devoted a lot of time to making connections. It seems to be paying off! My ninth grade World History I students routinely discuss connections to prior topics, the current topic, and things in their lives when we wrap up a lesson. I also incorporate writing into each lesson, and I am seeing references to making connections in the writing samples. My students seem to be much more involved and active this year. I see my students' confidence levels increase with each new topic. What have you noticed with your students and their learning journey this year?
